Chainfire

Terry Goodkind

This derailed series gets back on track with this book. It features a missing Kahlan and Nicci's finest moment since "Faith of the Fallen" as she leads thed defense of Altu'Rang - an exciting military fantasy sequence.

As good as this book is, it is not on the same level as "Stone of Tears" and "Faith of the Fallen". In fact, I think "Blood of the Fold" is better than this. It is the fourth best book in the series so far.

With the beginning pages of this book I had the distinct impression that Goodkind’s writing style has become distinctly better. The impression lasted for a bit until Terry went back to his old habit of repeating the events from previous books at length. A habit which had the usual effect, it made the book as slow as molasses. The beginning of "Chainfire" is not as slow as "Temple of the Winds" but it's slow. Too much time dwelling on the angst at Kahlan’s disappearance plus the Beast was so hyped up but when it finally shows up it is a disappointing, sketchy mess.

The defense of Altu’Rang was top level entertainment, so was every scene in the Wizard’s Keep and the Deep Nothing. The Garden of Life scene with Richard was extremely good and so was the ensuing scenes at the D’Haran Army camp.
